Hopes of a Cat-Free Counter Sinking Fast

You'll recall that a couple of months ago my boys discovered the wonders of the kitchen counter. It was a loss of innocence, both for them and for us.

Since then, we've cat-proofed the counter to make it boring for them and we've strategically positioned our Skat-Kat cat deterrant at various points on the counter. The boys have at least gotten the message that we disapprove of them going up on the counter so they mainly do it when we're not looking.

Every time I see Arthur or Beowulf in the kitchen sink, I hit them with a stream of cold water from the sink, but today I caught Beowulf hiding in the sink and the water did not deter him. When I finally picked him up and removed him from the sink, he came back to lick the faucet. I think I created a monster, a cat that likes water!

Awwww Avram, how cute! Kitties will do their own thing!! My cats have free reign of my apt. simply because I gave up trying to restrict them (I've cat-proofed everything, as you have)... they simply have indomitable, independent souls. Gotta love 'em!

Scooby like to drink from the faucet too. New baby Scout is just discovering the counter. You know the minute you leave the apt. they go to all the places they're not allowed when you are there!

Hi Arthur, it is your country cousin Tannie Man. You think we are related? I do, cuz, I love to drink water from any tap or bath tub faucet...you must try the tub.

I have problems from the pesky Blackie...he is a copy cat! He will wake my mom up in the middle of the night yodeling into the bath tub faucet...we are not related to him, ha! (I really am his brother.)

Please visit my blog I have questions there for you, I am taking a poll...just for us 4 legged furry folk!

Actually that was Beowulf in the sink, but Arthur goes there too once a blue moon.

Hey, nice blog. I found it because I was looking for information on cat ownership. My husband and I will be getting a cat or two within the next couple of months.

This is going to sound weird, but did you go to Binghamton? I think I might know you.

Congrats on the kitties. They are adorable!

See at least 116 photos of cats in sinks at Flickr. They seem to like it there : )

There is always http://catsinsinks.com/

Some of the cats look a bit guilty, but most don't. They have these "yes. i am a cat. in the sink. want to make something of it?" expressions on their furry little faces.

one of our cats liks going into the tub after i shower. he acts very sneaky and guilty about it, and i have no idea why -- nobody minds and nobody's ever punished him for it.

I gave up a long time ago, cats go where they want to go.

I put carpet tape on the edge of the counters, a couple of times getting sticky feet and they don't venture up there anymore. A few years later I found traces of a violation and out came the carpet tape. No more counter adventures to date.

Often you can't keep cats off the counters, but what you can do is keep some baking soda nearby, and after the cats are off the counter, wipe it down with the powder, using a sponge. This will help keep away germs...and you won't have to worry so much about the boys being up there occassionally.

Heh! My cat loves icecubes. I cant get a drink of water without dropping a couple of cubes in his bowl. And then he will sit there staring at it.

About keeping cats away from unwanted spaces: I have found citronella oil to be amazingly helpful. I am yet to meet a cat who liked the smell.

Miss Bonnie has been a "sinker" all her life. She lies in wait for me to turn on the faucet for her to drink. I reduced this problem by getting her a cat fountain - she wanted the running water. I've learned that cats never learn "stay off," they just know "don't get caught."
