Canadian Press: Complaints Started in December

According to the Canadian Press (via howl911 and Pet Connection ), Menu Foods started receiving complaints as far back as December:

Starting in December, concerns began filtering back to the company through toll-free customer lines about the "cuts and gravy" style pet food.

Callers complained their animals had fallen ill after eating the food, although no direct link was established.

Of course, AP reports say the company told the FDA that complaints started on February 20th. So the question is this: how long as Menu Foods known it was peddling poison? Was it a month or three months? Either way, they sat on that knowledge for a long time.

It just breaks my heart to think that companies that cater to people who have pets they adore would jeopardize their health so carelessly. I know I shouldn't be surprised, but it galls me to think that the practices that Menufoods employ to 'test' their foods is allowed. All consumers should be aware and make their choice, but I for one will never ever buy any product they make for my furr babies.

They've definitely lost our business. No more Nutro or Authority (wet or dry) for us. We didn't use their other brands, and we never will.

Again, as I said earlier, I urge everyone to NOT BUY cat or dog food of ANY brand at Petco, Petsmart, or any of the national chains. Obviously, they don't do their homework. I'll be going back to my local "natural pet" store, and pay the 95 cents or more per can for Wellness or Natural Balance (my kitties LOVE the "Indoor Cat" flavor of Natural Balance). This horrible tragedy is almost totally the responsibility of these callous pet food manufacturers, but we can also take responsibility for finding a local vendor who we trust has done their homework for us in finding pet food makers who use ethical and safe procedures. I pray (and I don't usually pray) for the health of the sickened cats and dogs, and for their human companions.

Great information, and heartbreaking. I'm also keeping my blog updated with info - it turns out (as someone alluded to here a couple of days ago) that Menu Foods also makes food for Wellness, Wysong and Innova, among others. See http://www.petfoodexpress.com/petfood/default.asp?pageid=78&Section=About to find out more.

I haven't visited your blog in a long time, but me and Mom read every word of all your posts on this. Mom is very upset. I'm crunching on Nutro Natural Choice Kitten kibble right now. She has feed me Iams, Science Diet and Nutro Max pouches, all on the recall (fortunately I didn't like them that much, but I ate a lot of Iams). She is very upset that all of this is made by the same cheapy business. I really like my dry kibble, so Mom's not sure what to do, but she is very, very upset.

Love your blog, will be by more often.
